ADVANCEMENTS IN ENDODONTICS: NAVIGATING THE ROAD TO APEX

Several technologies have been introduced to the endodontic specialty in the past few years. Among these technologies are CBCT, dental lasers, AI softwares and dynamic navigation. A new generation of dental lasers which are utilized in non-surgical (acoustic streaming disinfection of root canal systems) and surgical procedures ( photo-biomodulation to accelerate wound healing) have become essential for not only supreme clinical results but also enhanced workflow.

ENDODONTIC Irrigation with SWEEPS

SWEEPS® technology represents a breakthrough method for 3D cleaning and disinfection of the root canal system. This advanced Er:YAG laser technology(Fotona) is used to activate the commonly used irrigants in endodontics (NaOCl and EDTA) with the laser tip kept stationary in the access cavity of the tooth while simultaneously irrigating the whole root canal system at once. This next generation of digitally pulsed lasers produced synchronized pairs of ultra-short pulses whereby an accelerated collapse of laser-induced bubbles is achieved, leading to enhanced shockwave emission even inside the narrowest root canals. SWEEPS® endodontic laser treatment successfully addresses a major disadvantage of classical chemo-mechanical treatment procedures which is the inability to completely clean, debride and disinfect anatomically complex root canal systems.

This presentation will focus on how these technologies can be utilized in non-surgical and challenging surgical endodontic procedures. Based on the information provided, changes in treatment protocols and armamentarium will be presented.
